There are places that represent far more than a geographical area—they embody an authentic cultural heritage. Chianti is one of them. Rolling hills, medieval castles, vineyards and historic villages tell a centuries-old story that continues to thrive through its traditions, its people and the institutions deeply rooted in this remarkable land. Among them, the Chianti League (Lega del Chianti) holds a special place.
The Military League of Chianti was established during the Middle Ages, when the Republic of Florence organized the Chianti territory into an administrative and military district composed of the Terzieri of Radda, Gaiole and Castellina. Its emblem became the famous Black Rooster (Gallo Nero) on a yellow and red background, a symbol that today is universally recognized as the emblem of Chianti Classico and its identity.
Over the centuries, the League underwent significant historical transformations before being reborn in modern times as a cultural and social organization. It was officially re-established in 1970 by the Sienese notary Gianni Ginanneschi, inspired by the ancient statutes while preserving their historical values and traditions. The first Captain was Napoleone Franceschetti, then director of Castello di Meleto (Viticola Toscana), who served for six months.
Today, the League’s mission is no longer military. Instead, it is dedicated to preserving the historical memory of Chianti, promoting its cultural heritage, and strengthening the sense of belonging to one of Italy’s most iconic wine regions.
What makes the Chianti League truly unique is its ability to unite tradition and modernity. On one hand, it preserves the charm of ancient investiture ceremonies, historic symbols and offices inspired by the original medieval organization. On the other, it actively promotes cultural events, social initiatives, local heritage and the excellence of the Chianti territory.
Joining the League is not simply becoming a member of an association—it means embracing a vision founded on respect for history, local communities and the cultural identity of Chianti.
For this reason, on 18 April I experienced one of the most meaningful moments of my professional and personal journey: my official investiture as Alfiere (Standard Bearer) during the ceremony held in the magnificent Church of Santo Spirito in Florence. It was an emotional and deeply symbolic occasion that strengthened my connection with an extraordinary land and with an institution that has safeguarded its identity for more than seven centuries.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Captain of the Chianti League, Giovanni Ricasoli Firidolfi, whose initiative and confidence made my appointment possible and encouraged my involvement in this important cultural and territorial mission.
For me, this honour also represents recognition of many years dedicated to promoting Chianti Classico as a wine ambassador and educator. Through tastings, events, wine communication and educational activities, I have always sought to share the authenticity, history and cultural significance of this extraordinary wine region.
The same ceremony also celebrated the investiture of Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoia as Honorary Legate (Legato di Collare), in an event that beautifully combined history, tradition and national heritage.
During the gala dinner held afterwards at Harry’s Bar in Florence, guests recalled a particularly significant chapter of Italian history: the relationship between their respective great-great-grandfathers, Bettino Ricasoli—the renowned “Iron Baron”—and King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia, two leading figures in the birth of the Kingdom of Italy during the Risorgimento.
It was a fascinating historical reminder that gave the evening an even deeper symbolic meaning, highlighting how Chianti and the great families that shaped its history also played an important role in the formation of modern Italy.
At a time when innovation is often discussed while our roots are overlooked, I believe experiences like this are especially meaningful. The future of wine and its territories also depends on our ability to tell their stories, preserve their culture and keep their spirit alive.
Perhaps this is the truest meaning of the Chianti League.
